Lesbury WI, January meeting

The new year started with a very well-attended meeting when the president welcomed members and two visitors to Lesbury WI’s first meeting of 2013.

Subscriptions were collected in a very efficient manner by our treasurer and as there was very little formal business to attend to, we were soon ready to welcome our speaker, Angela Clough, for the evening.

Angela works for Age UK, based in Alnwick, and began her presentation explaining how different charities joined together to form Age UK to save costs, amalgamate expertise and provide a wider service base for people over 50 years of age, their families and carers.

The charity can provide advice on benefits, community and social care, housing and a range of legal matters.

Age UK can provide home care assistants for personal care for people in their own homes and help with meal preparation, shopping, housework and laundry. There is also a Friendship Line available, where volunteers keep in regular contact with people who would appreciate a friendly chat.

Another very useful facility is a handyman service, covering many useful and essential services, and a gardening service.

We were very impressed with the array of help, advice and services provided, some free and some with charges, and felt that older people are very fortunate to have such a wide range of help available. Angela was warmly thanked for her talk.

After supper and chat, the competition winners were announced as Eleanor Morgan, Kathleen Turnbull and Elaine Foreman, and Kathleen was also our birthday girl of the month. Our next meeting is on February 12 when the speaker is Doreen Blevins on The Poison Garden, Alnwick.
