Lesbury WI, January meeting

CLEARLY LOVELY: At Lesbury WI’s first meeting of 2011, our President Val Brooks welcomed the members with seasonal greetings.

With formalities over and addressed, we were treated to a talk befitting a sparkling New Year from Helen Grierson, a local artisan whose specialist medium is glass and works out of a studio at Eshott Heugh.

After training in London, Helen returned to her native North East and began making stain glass panels for a variety of applications.

She likes to take her inspiration from the shapes and colours of nature which gives rise to organic and geometric designs seen in her work. We were taken through all the stages of making panels, from their design to the soldering of the lead and the cementing of the glass.

Helen then went on to describe a new avenue of work that she has embarked upon, that of fusion glass, where works are created by melting and annealing pieces of different coloured glass.

Continuing in the vitreous theme, the monthly competition was a glass ornament. Jane Norris’s piece was chosen as the winning entry.

The birthday flowers for January went to Hazel Wintrip.

Val brought the meeting to a close but made many of us envious by letting slip that she will not be with us in February as she will be in sunnier climes.

We look forward to our next meeting on Tuesday, February 8, which will include a talk by Andrew Findley titled Legal Advisor. The monthly competition is a fountain pen.
