Brian Burnie, founder of Daft as a Brush Cancer Care charity, talked to Alnmouth WI at their June meeting. He brought his driver, Glen, and one of the Daft as a Brush vehicles. These transport patients to hospitals such as the Freeman and are driven by 200 volunteers as an act of support for patients.
This service cuts out the long wait for transport at hospitals and patients are collected from home at a time which suits them. They are accompanied by a carer who stays with them while they are being treated.
Last year the charity provided around 10,000 cancer patient journeys.
Brian takes his inspiration from his patients and local people who give their time and support to those in need. He quoted from Martin Luther King, “I have a dream.” He certainly brought his dream to us and caught us up in his vision accompanied by a great deal of humour.
He was ‘Daft as a Brush’ and swept us away with his presentation, vision and achievement.
