A section of the A697 at Powburn has been closed in both directions after a serious crash this afternoon.
It happened at the Ingram turn-off at around 2pm and diversions have been put in place with the road expected to be closed for at least three hours.
Northumbria Police has described the crash as a ‘serious injury collision’ involving two vehicles with casualties being taken to hospital.
It is believed that three helicopters were at the scene, two of which were from the Great North Air Ambulance.
A 63-year-old man, who was the driver of one of the vehicles was rescued by paramedics and Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service before being taken to Newcastle RVI by the air ambulance with leg and pelvis injuries. He was described as being in a critical/life threatening condition.
Motorist are advised to avoid the area and HGVs are advised to use the A1.
Motor patrols and Coquetdale police officers will be in the area to ensure traffic disruption is kept to a minimum.
