The course starts on Monday, January 9, and covers the basic requirements for someone who wants to go to sea as a commercial fisherman.

It is sponsored by Seafish and the Marine Management Organisation and the chance to take the course for free will save participants £540. The course is open to anyone aged 17 and over.

On top of this, ASSTA is running free refresher courses for fishermen whose certificates are three or more years old.

A first-aid course will take place at North Shields tomorrow. A sea survival session will be held at Blyth on Thursday, December 15, and a fire-fighting course will take place the following day at North Shields.

Anyone that is interested in either the Introduction to Commercial Fishing Course or refresher courses should contact ASSTA on 07702042551 or 01665 581309.
