Lady Joicey, HospiceCare North Northumberland’s patron, has officially opened its new shop Wear&Care, marking the completion of the first stage of the modernisation of the charity’s Hazel Marsden House premises in Berwick.
The organisation, which has hospice centres in Alnwick and Berwick, is increasingly delivering palliative care in people’s homes so a new vision for the former day hospice is needed and the shop forms part of that.
Lady Joicey went on to thank patients and local residents for their understanding whilst works have been underway, and the charity’s volunteers and staff for their efforts to launch the new venture.
The second phase of the work, which will see the creation of a new drop-in therapy area and community hub along with the refurbishment of individual treatment rooms, is due to be completed by the end of October.
Additionally it is hoped that the monthly coffee mornings, run by volunteers to raise funds for the Charity, will also recommence before Christmas.
For the launch of Wear&Care guests were treated to refreshments and a live musical performance from local singer Edward Franks before the ribbon was cut.
Retail manager Thomas Brindle said: “We were blessed with glorious weather for the official launch of Wear&Care and trade was brisk all day as guests and shoppers snapped up bargains that the volunteers have worked so hard to sort, price and prepare in readiness for the event.
“We now look forward to the completion of the works to Hazel Marsden House which will allow local people to access the full range of services and activities on offer.”
The shop is open from 9am to 4.30pm Tuesday to Saturday. Donations are always gratefully received and enquiries can be made by calling 01289 332290.
