Jo is the golden girl at Euro aquathlon

In a week of European turmoil, Newcastle University's Jo Gascoigne-Owens defended her European Aquathlon title by a comfortable margin.Â

Jo, who is a member of Alnwick Harriers, travelled to Chateauroux in France to represent Great Britain in the European Aquathlon Championships.

Aquathlon is an exciting swim-run event and this race was no exception, with big crowds and competitors from across Europe.

The race began with a 1km swim in a lake, including some action at the half way point with competitors running out onto a beach and then diving back into the water.

Jo finished the swim in fifth position and the race continued with a 5km run.  Running is Jo’s strongest discipline and she soon moved into the lead, finishing the event three minutes ahead of her nearest rival.

Once again she beat women in all age groups.

Jo, who is sponsored and coached by Newcastle University’s Sports Centre, said: “It’s great to be European Champion again.

“It’s a bit of a surprise since I’ve had a difficult year with injury and I’d like to thank my family, Alnwick Triathlon Club and Alnwick Harriers for supporting me.

“I am really grateful to Newcastle University Sports Centre, for continuing to sponsor me with super facilities and coaching.”

Jo is now looking forward to finishing her season in style, running in the elite field of the Great North Run and then competing in the Berlin Marathon.
