THE Jam Jar Army is spreading its reach further across the county.

As the total continues to rise, supermarket Sainsbury’s has donated empty jam jars to James Calvert Spence College in Amble for pupils to fill.

And while the schools have broken up for summer a number of jars have already been returned and more are being topped up during the holidays.

The Army is also trying to tap in to the tourist season in Alnmouth.

The Hope and Anchor is putting jars on its tables for customers to put their small change in to.

And the Dandelion Cafe at Nether Grange, part of HS Holidays, also in the seaside village is also doing the same.

The Schooner Inn has also joined in the challenge with jars in its bar as has the Red Lion.

This weekend jars will also be handed out at the annual Percy Hunt Puppy Show in Alnwick.

Taking place on Saturday at 3pm, the show is a social event and attracts those who take part in the hunt as well as followers.

Around 100 jars will be handed out and a speech about the Jam Jar Army will be given by the chairman of the hunt.
