Green-fingered youngster Jack Goodwin has lofty ambitions to lift the Gazette’s Sunflower Challenge title this year.

His blooms have shot up since he sowed the seeds back in May and then planted them in his dad’s garden in Upper Barresdale, Alnwick. The nine-year-old’s tallest sunflower stands at a statuesque 9ft 3ins and they are still growing strong! Jack’s dad John said: “He is a keen gardener and likes to do everything, including cutting the lawns. He has done a fantastic job – he won’t let me do the gardening!” Is your sunflower taller than Jack’s? Email a picture to michael.pearson@jpress.co.uk with your name, age, address, contact details and measurement by the closing date of August 31. The winner of the competition, run in conjunction with Alnwick in Bloom, will receive a £25 WHSmith voucher, second will £15 and third £10. Five runners-up will each get a £5 voucher. Awards will be presented at an Alnwick in Bloom prize-giving event later this year.
