'˜It's make or break', says lights chairman

The team behind the festive illuminations in Seahouses requires urgent financial support, with the group’s chairman admitting that the situation ‘has become critical’ and it is ‘make or break time’.

The cost of the display has increased over the years, and despite the team’s best efforts, many of the current features now require replacement, due to the effects of a salty atmosphere and severe winter weather.

The team needs to raise approximately £10,000, if the lights are to be shining again for Christmas 2018.

Volunteers are doing all they can to attract donations and funding from a variety of sources, including grants, but they urgently need support from local businesses, tourism and individuals.

Group chairman Ian Clayton said: “I am afraid it is make or break time – the community must decide if it wants festive lights or not. I cannot stress too greatly that the situation has become critical.

“Replacement equipment is expensive, and we are doing everything we can to obtain the best deals from our suppliers.

“However, without more financial support, we will simply not be able to put on a display this year.”

The team of volunteers has grown over the years, but some more younger helpers would still be welcome. All of the team give their time, use of the vehicles and their tools, freely.

As well as the Christmas lights, the dedicated team of volunteers also stage a free-to-attend firework display at the harbour on Christmas Eve.
