A flood-prevention project in north Northumberland has been commended in an awards scheme for civil-engineering projects.

The annual ICE (Institute of Civil Engineers) North East Robert Stephenson Awards are held to promote and reward excellence in civil engineering.

Belford’s Natural Flood Management Scheme – or leaky ponds – a partnership project between the Environment Agency and Newcastle University, won in the small category (under £500,000).

An Environment Agency spokeswoman said: “We’re passionate about the work we do and we’re delighted the hard work and professionalism of our staff and the collaboration with partners to deliver cost-effective, innovative projects has been recognised.

“Both the winning and commended schemes drew excellent comments from the judges.”
