Injuries in A1 crash after car ploughs into other vehicles

A woman was taken to hospital after suffering injuries in a four-vehicle crash on the A1 at the weekend.

Police were called to the incident on Saturday, which happened close to roadworks on the northbound carriageway at Felton bypass at 11.46pm.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said that, for reasons yet to be established, a Kia car collided with the rear of three other stationary vehicles which were waiting at traffic lights.

The other vehicles involved were a Mercedes-Benz van, a Citroën C1 and a Porsche Boxster.

A female occupant of the Citroën suffered leg injuries and was taken to the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital, in Cramlington, and discharged following treatment.

Three other people in the Citroën suffered minor injuries.

Police, fire and ambulance crews attended and the stretch was closed for approximately three hours to allow for the casualties to be dealt with. Local diversions were put in place during this period.

Police are appealing for information and anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101 quoting reference 1423 10/12/16.
