Injured woman taken to hospital after incident at Newcastle Central Station

An injured woman was taken to hospital following an incident at Newcastle Central Station on the day of the 40th Great North Run.

The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) and British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed in separate statements that its staff were called in response to an incident at the station on Sunday, September 12.

An NEAS spokeswoman said on Sunday: “Just before 11am on Sunday, September 12, we were called to reports of a female injured at Central Station in Newcastle.

"We dispatched one ambulance and transported the patient to the RVI."

A BTP statement, issued on Monday, September 13, confirmed reports of “a casualty on the tracks” and added that the woman’s injuries were not “life-changing” or “life-threatening”.

It said: “British Transport Police were called to Newcastle Central railway station at 11am on Sunday, September 12 following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended, and a woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Her injuries are not life-changing or life-threatening.

“This incident is not being treated as suspicious.”

Operator LNER shared details of the incident on its social media channels shortly after 11.30am on Sunday, as thousands of people travelled to the region for the Great North Run.

Their tweet, posted at around 11.35am, reported that someone had been hit by a train.

It said: “We are saddened to report due to a person being hit by a train at Newcastle, train services running through this station may be cancelled or delayed.”

Train services between Newcastle and Morpeth, Newcastle and Carlisle and Newcastle and Middlesbrough/Nunthorpe were affected for a number of hours on Sunday following the incident.
