A man has been airlifted to hospital today after the horse he was riding in Northumberland stumbled after a jump and fell on top of him.
The Great North Air Ambulance (GNAAS), based near Penrith, was called just before 9.30am to the accident at Kirkheaton, five miles west of Belsay.
The 25-year-old local man had sustained a serious chest and back injury.
He was stabilised by a GNAAS doctor at the scene and flown to the major trauma centre at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle, for specialist care. The flight took five minutes.
