Name: Chris Hedley
Relay section: Newbiggin
CHRIS was 19 when he became an older brother to Joseph, who was born with breathing difficulties, ended up with cerebral palsy and was in hospital for five weeks.
Chris stayed with his mum during that time, while his little brother needed 24-hour care. Sadly Joseph died in Febuary last year, aged 16 months.
And it was because of his help, support and care that Chris’s mum nominated him to be a torchbearer.
In her nomination she said: “Christopher was with us all the way, he was a lovable brother.
“Christopher learnt how to do his brother’s physio and suction to clear his airways. Most kids his age would not have been so caring.”
She added: “Christopher kept us going even though he was grieving himself. He is our hero.”
He also took part in the Great North Run for Scope.
Chris said he will be taking part in the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in memory of Joseph and is really looking forward to it.
“I cannot wait, I never thought I would get the chance to do it,” he said.
