An illuminating evening at village hall

A former headteacher is returning to her old school later this month to light up what is now the village hall.

Chatton Village School was closed by Northumberland County Council and is now a vibrant village hall used by the community of Tillside.

Various improvements have been carried out to the building by the trustees, such as a new heating system, a commercial gym and solar panels on the roof, and there are ongoing fund-raising projects.

The building is used for events, talks, classes and private functions, available to hire.

The trustees have recently installed a new lighting system in the main hall, which previously only had the old fluorescent classroom lighting and with a modern dimmable system of wall-lights, it will enable more atmospheric events to take place in the main hall.

Kathleen Charters, who was one of the longest-serving headteachers at the village school, has agreed to return to her old stomping ground to turn on the new lights on Friday, October 21.

The formal switch-on ceremony will be followed by a talk from Mrs Charters on her days in charge of the school.

It is hoped that as many ex-pupils, parents and staff as possible will be able to attend the event, which starts at 7.30pm. Trustees are trying to contact as many old school pupils for the event as possible.

Jim Railton, one of the committee members and an old parent, said: “Mrs Charters was a fabulous headteacher of the old school who called a spade a spade and had a huge impact on the children’s formative years in this area.”
