Illegal fishing

ENFORCEMENT officers from the Environment Agency are closing in on offenders who fish illegally in the North East.

The officers, who have powers to arrest and detain offenders, uncovered 87 offences, which include fishing without a licence and fishing in the close season, since March 16.

Anyone caught fishing without a rod licence could face a maximum fine of £2,500 whilst bye law offences such as fishing out of season or using illegal baits now carries a maximum fine of £50,000.
