This Saturday sees Alnmouth host its annual fancy-dress raft race.
There are two races, the one for juniors starts at the Ferryman’s Hut at the bottom of Riverside Road at 3.30pm and the adults start at 4.30pm from the Duchess Bridge.
The races first took place more than 40 years ago and since then have raised tens of thousands of pounds for the RNLI. One Alnmouth resident tells how she took part in the first one as a 12 year-old. She was in the winning team, but was disappointed she was not allowed to share the first prize, a crate of ale.
For the past eight years, the event has been organised by Bren Shell, landlord at the Sun Inn in the village, who said: “This is a great opportunity for competitors and spectators alike to have an enjoyable afternoon knowing that they are raising money for such a worthy cause in the process.”
