UNSUNG heroes who do amazing things have been honoured for their bravery, courage, determination and strength in the Pride of Northumberland Awards 2012.
Organised by Northeast Press and the Berwick Advertiser, the awards are a special opportunity to celebrate excellence in our communities and reward groups and individuals in the county that go above and beyond the call of duty.
They are also a chance to celebrate the successes and talents of those who are not always in the spotlight.
Six people, two groups and four children received special recognition at a glittering ceremony at the Alnwick Garden’s Pavilion last Thursday.
Opening the event, Northeast Press’s managing director Stuart Birkett said: “These awards are about celebrating the achievements of Northumberland’s true heroes.
“Brilliant neighbours, unassuming fundraisers, community groups and sporting stars.
“Despite the inclement weather, this summer must rank as one of the best ever for the UK and for Northumberland.
“From the moment of the Olympic flame crossed the border into the county on the 14th of June, right up to tonight, the people of Northumberland have done the county proud.
“It’s the people of Northumberland that have brought the county alive during 2012.
“And it is some of them that we are honouring and celebrating at these awards.
“The standard and number of entries was up again this year and, therefore, everyone who was shortlisted really has done incredibly well.
“Many of the categories were extremely difficult to judge and it’s a shame everyone couldn’t win.”
Mr Birkett was on the judging panel alongside Northumberland County Council leader Jeff Reid, Northumbrian Water’s Cara Charlton and Lisa Scott from Blyth Valley Arts and Leisure.
Metro Radio’s Anna Foster returned to present the evening while category sponsors presented the winners with their awards.
“This is a wonderful event,” she said.
“To say I am humbled it is a bit of a cliché but you find yourself using these words because it is difficult to describe such wonderful people.
“Every year I go away feeling inspired.
“I go away a better person.”
