Holy Island round-up: Cairns and the castle
Stone cairns built next to the beach near the Lindisfarne lime kilns are to be dismantled.
The stones, some reaching two metres in height, are perceived as a public risk and present land maintenance issues.
• Preparations are being made for the closure of Lindisfarne Castle for major restoration work. The castle will close on October 31 and remain shut through the 2017 season. The process of cataloguing and cleaning its contents is now under way.
