Holiday hounds need a home-from-home

A surge in demand for canine vacations has sparked a hunt for dog lovers to look after the holidaying pooches.

Barking Mad, the award-winning home-from-home pet-care organisation, needs more hosts to share their homes with dogs whose holidaying owners are looking for an alternative to kennels.

Tina Young, of Warkworth, who runs the franchise in north and east Northumberland, is hoping to recruit more hosts between now and the start of the summer rush.

She said: “We have nearly 50 hosts who regularly look after dogs of all varieties and sizes – such as small terriers, medium-sized Labradors and Cockerpoos, and larger breeds like Bernese Mountain dogs and Irish wolfhounds.

“They do a fantastic job of providing the same levels of love, care and attention the dogs receive at home.

“But we need more hosts to help us cope with demand. We are keen to recruit people, young and old, with or without dogs of their own.

“The main requirements are that they should be at home, enjoy the company of dogs and be sufficiently fit and active to provide their four-legged guests with the exercise they need.”

Barking Mad hosts Steph and Malcolm Skene, of Alnwick, recently won a Spotlight on a Host award in recognition of their care of holidaying dogs.

Steph said: “We thought for ages about being hosts as we were unsure we had enough experience having only ever looked after one dog, albeit for 15 years! We’ve now looked after loads of dogs, each with their own little quirks and needs and it is very rewarding to give them a great holiday and send them happily home to their owners.”
