Volunteers including local scouts planted some 2,500 daffodil bulbs on the far bank and 2,200 crocus bulbs on the nearside (South Road) on Sunday. It was a day later than planned after heavy rain on Saturday.

“They have done a great job,” said Coun Mark Mather, chairman of Wooler Parish Council.

Now, the small team of workers has appealed for help from the local community to plant the remaining 3,000 or so bulbs.

“We’re going to finish off the crocus planting on Thursday night and the daffodils at 9am on Sunday,” said Coun Robert Donkin.

“The last bit is on sandy ground so should be a bit easier.”The bulbs were purchased by the parish council to add some spring colour to the area, supplemented by a £100 contribution from Fergusons.
