A building society with branches in Northumberland, including Alnwick, is asking its members to use their annual vote to have their say on how the organisation is being run, while raising vital funds for Marie Curie.
Yorkshire Building Society has committed to making a donation to the charity for every vote received for its annual general meeting (AGM) this year.
The Society will donate 25p to Marie Curie for every online vote received, and 15p for every postal vote received.
The money will go towards the Society’s Hour of Need campaign, to help Marie Curie nurses provide even more support for people living with a terminal illness and their families in the UK.
Daniel Tyler, manager of the Alnwick branch of Yorkshire Building Society, said: “Some of our members may not realise that every year they have a right to vote on a number of Society matters including voting on the election and re-election of our directors.
“As a mutual, our members have a voice and we listen to them. We set ourselves apart from banks by not having external shareholders – our members are our owners – and the AGM vote is one of a number of ways we encourage members who are eligible to vote to actively get involved with the Society.
“I hope the people of Alnwick and surrounding areas use their vote to have their say and by doing so help us support our ambitious, but hugely successful, Hour of Need campaign.”
Every £20 raised by the Hour of Need campaign will fund one hour of care and the Society is aiming to raise £1million by December 2016, which equates to funding two hours of care by a Marie Curie Nurse for every hour of the campaign.
Members of Yorkshire Building Society are being asked to vote on a number of decisions including the election and re-election of directors and the annual report and accounts. In 2015, member votes as part of the Society’s AGM helped to raise nearly £30,000 for Marie Curie. Voting packs are posted or emailed direct to members.
Online and postal votes must be received by 5pm on Friday, April 22, but members can also vote in person at Yorkshire Building Society’s AGM, which will be held at the Hilton Hotel in Leeds on Tuesday, April 26.
