Light-hearted residents who are preparing for a pants-themed fund-raiser are launching a special joke book this weekend, as part of their charity efforts.

Those living on Percy Terrace and South Street, in Alnwick, will be hanging 250 metres of red and white underwear bunting in their streets to mark Red Nose Day, which is Friday, March 13.

To tie in with the eye-catching display, which will go up on Sunday and hang for a week, the residents have produced an underwear-themed joke book.

The quirky read is priced £1 and will go on sale in Alnwick Market Place on Saturday.

It will also be available in the town’s Newcastle Building Society and Post Office branches and a number of other outlets until Saturday, March 14.

The underwear-themed bunting has been made by a hardy team of volunteers from the two streets and it is hoped that the stunt will raise at least £1,000 for Red Nose Day.

The wacky idea is a nod to Alnwick’s public pants, which once provided a ready source of water to the town’s people.

Project director Philip Angier said: “Alnwick is famous for its pants, so we thought, why don’t we fill our streets with underwear.”
