Harbour Day success

The event featured a range of entertainment, including music from the Northumbria Army Cadet Force Cassino Band and a variety of stalls.

The volunteers from the town’s RNLI did two exercises, while retired vicar Rev John Maddock-Lyon led a service dedicated to the RNLI.

It was the last Harbour Day for the current all-weather Mersey-class lifeboat, The Four Boys, which is being replaced later this year by the new Shannon-class vessel.

The Shannon is due to be arriving at the town’s RNLI station at 1pm on Wednesday, October 12, weather permitting. She will be operational a short time after, following crew training, and will be named Elizabeth and Leonard.

Sunday’s Harbour Day raised more than £7,000 for the town’s RNLI.

Katrina Cassidy, chairman of Amble Lifeboat Fund-raisers, said: “We had a bit of a delayed start due to the weather, but it didn’t dampen people’s spirits and they still turned out for the event. The afternoon kicked in and it went really well.

“To raise more than £7,000 for the cause is very good, considering the weather.”
