Amble and Warkworth Diabetes UK Group chairman Derek Conway said the publicity we gave the organisation’s open meeting, staged in Amble on January 18, pulled in fresh faces.

Grateful Derek said: “The meeting had been publicised in the previous week’s Northumberland Gazette, as a result of which seven new members joined the group.

“This shows the importance of community-based newspapers to voluntary groups in north Northumberland.

“Getting through to people with diabetes is not easy, so the Gazette covering the open meeting helped some recently-diagnosed diabetes sufferers to be aware of our meetings.

“Two came from Shilbottle, which is not quite in the area we cover, but as our meetings are open to anyone, it doesn’t matter where they live, they are welcome.”

The next open meeting is Monday, April 11, at 2pm in St Cuthbert’s Church Hall, Dovecote Street, Amble, and the guest speaker will be the professor who heads the diabetes research team at Newcastle University Biomedical School.

The group was set up last year by Dr Ben Burville, who is the Coquet Medical Group’s practice lead GP on diabetes. It is supported by national charity Diabetes UK.
