A spokesperson for Howick Coastguard said: “The team were tasked to assist the North East Ambulance Service due to the remote location of the castle and the inaccessibility for an ambulance.

"The team were first on scene and carried out immediate casualty care.

"One team member was sent, with the Coastguard vehicle, to transport the paramedic crew and their equipment from the ambulance up to the castle.

“NEAS carries out further assessment and the team transported the casualty back to the waiting ambulance.
