The namesake Stephen Carey Fund was set up in memory of the grass-roots footballer, from Alnmouth, who collapsed and died while playing a game.

• Lesley-Anne Hayton was entered into the Great North Run as a Christmas present. She ran it three days after her 30th birthday and took three hours. “Maybe three is the magic number,” she said.

• Kirsty Anderson entered the race for DBA UK; a charity which aims to deliver support, research and hope to the Diamond-Blackfan anaemia community in the UK. She managed a time of two hours, seven minutes, and said: “I had a great time and the atmosphere was fantastic.”
