A PAIR of avid Alnwick golfers are taking on a ‘tee-total’ challenge as they play every golf hole in the county for charity.

Iain Wilson and Phill Ginger, members of Alnwick Castle Golf Club, will play 585 holes on 32 courses over ten days in May to raise money for BBC Children in Need.

The duo will set off from Bellingham in the west of the county on Thursday, May 10 before playing the length and breadth of the county, finishing at their home club on Saturday, May 19.

Three of the clubs – Slaley Hall, Close House and Longhirst Hall – have two separate courses to take on, Matfen Hall has 27 holes while some of the others are nine-hole courses.

Iain said: “It was Phill’s idea and he broached the subject when we both had alcohol on board.

“He asked if I fancied playing some golf and raising some money for charity, but the closer it gets to the challenge, the more apprehensive I am. I think we will be fed up of golf after the first day!”

The challenge will offer them a tour of the county that will include playing at three courses they haven’t played before.

“We are playing everything from the nine-holers with an honesty box in the clubhouse for visitors to the major courses which hold top events, like Slaley Hall,” said Iain.

If that wasn’t enough, Iain will celebrate his 62nd birthday midway through the challenge – he can look forward to rounds at Burgham Park, Linden Hall and Rothbury on the day.

As well as raising sponsorship, around 20 of the clubs have donated fourballs (allowing four people to play a round), which will be auctioned to raise funds.
