Alnwick

Get in !!! The shout all golfers want to hear when their tee shot holes out. That’s exactly what happened to Simon Fuller in the Swansfield Cup Medal last weekend.

After a quite uninspiring round, containing one six, three sevens and two eights, Simon’s last throw of the dice was a perfectly hit seven iron at the 179yard par three 17th hole, which dropped just short and quietly rolled into the hole for his first ever ace.

Not unsurprisingly, his neyt 75 score was eclipsed by Peter Lee who, seemingly on a roll after his 36pts win in the Senior’s Friday morning roll up, returned a fabulous nett 67 to beat Gerry McInally by one shot, Gerry, himself also in a rich vein of form following up his third place finish in last week’s Calvert Rosebowl.

These two were followed by a plethora of nett 69s by Alan Craigs, who was placed third on countback from Kevin Murphy,Colin Donaldson,Alan Dodd and a fine seventh place finish from relative newcomer Keith Robba.

As well as the hole in one for Simon Fuller there were mere twos for Alan Black,Alan Dodd,Ian Tate,Jack Friar and Keith Richardson

Dunstanburgh

On Saturday, Dunstanburgh hosted the County Salver and in testing conditions it was the home club captain Gary Mallaburn who came out on top with an excellent score of 75 - 7 - 68, which included an eagle two on the 438yd 18th holing out with a seven iron. After this score his handicap was cut to five, which is the lowest handicap he has been in his playing career.

On Sunday it was the 36 hole Club Championship and the winner was Stuart Sullivan who had two wonderful rounds of 73 and 75 for a total of 148 to win by five shots from Dave Saunders who had rounds of 79 and 74 for a total of 153.

Dave had the consolation of winning the nett prize with a score of 143. This is the first year that Stuart has played competitive golf at Dunstanburgh and hopefully this is the first of many wins for him.

Also in this competition, Trevor Parish had his first hole in one after 30 years of trying, holing a pitching wedge shot on the 101yd 13th hole.

Seniors’ Outing Cup: Twenty five seniors intrepidly ventured south of the Wansbeck to play for their Outing Cup at Blyth GC. Despite being called off the course due to lightning that led to a 1 hour delay, club secretary Tim Capron kept his concentration to take the trophy to go alongside the full Club Outing Cup that he won there in Paul Douglass’ year of captaincy. (Rumours that he is pressing the club to make Blyth a permanent home for these trophies as per Augusta and The Masters are unfounded!)
