Golf day tees up £2.5k despite downpours

In fact, the heavy rain, which led to the golf being called off halfway through, actually meant more money went to Abbeyfield as it was agreed that all of the unused prize money would be added to the pot.

The fund-raiser, organised by Steve Miller, of AA Taxis, following a successful event for Barndale House School in 2015, brought in a total of £2,515 for Abbeyfield.

Sally Brewis, who is on the charity’s executive committee, explained that the idea for what to do with the cash came from Steve’s wife. They will use the money raised to create a reminiscence room in its Abbeyfield House, on South Road, which will be decorated and filled with furniture from the 1950s to spark memories for the home’s older residents.

Jim Thompson, chairman of Abbeyfield North Northumberland Extra Care Society, said: “We are very grateful, because we didn’t ask, Steve came to us. We’re so impressed that everyone has donated the winnings.”

Steve thanked all of the businesses and sponsors that got involved and supported the day, as well as Dan at Alnwick Castle Golf Club, who allowed them to use the course free of charge.
