Getting creative is all child's play

And while Alnwick has a decent number of events and groups on offer, it has always felt like something was missing.

However, something has come along to fill that gap.

Creative Cocoon is the family arm of the Alnwick Playhouse.

Since last year the venue, which hosts acts from all over the country and beyond, as well as showing films, live streams from famous theatres and more, has developed a programme especially for families and children under 10.

I went along to the very first Creative Cocoon session for the under sixes, with my children, of course, with storytelling, music and more, and knew that it was on to a winner.

And last week I was fortunate enough to be able to go along again (working on a Tuesday means I cannot get to them all). And it hasn’t changed.

Last Wednesday the studio at the Playhouse was transformed into a music-making emporium.

Led by the brilliant Caro Fentiman, the session was based around different sounds that children can make with different instruments.

My son, Harvey, who turns two next month, absolutely loved it.

We started with a song introducing the children and saying hello, before moving on to instruments and stories.

But it isn’t regimented, and if your child is like mine and likes exploring new things, they can wander off into a teepee and play or open up the dolls’ house.

Our favourite part was the use of the parachute at the end, on which we bounced mummy and baby fox. Of course dancing to the glitterball was also top of the bill.

The Creative Cocoon programme aims to create freedom for little ones to explore, express themselves and have fun.

The next session takes place on Thursday, March 2, with a special event for World Book Day with Helen Ellis.

Then on Tuesday, March 14 Pippa Willets will lead a visual arts and making session. On March 22 there will be a sensory storytime in the bar with Helen Ellis (book in advance as there are only 10 spaces) and Tuesday, March 28, is a special movement and dance workshop with Emma Hardman. Sessions are £4 per family (two adults, two children).

There will also be a free storytelling session in the Playhouse at noon on Wednesday, February 22. Half-term will also see Shark in the Park on Thursday, February 23, and How to Hide a Lion on Saturday, March 4.
