GAZETTE COMMENT: The pressure pays off and makes fight worthwhile

Plans going on show and the pledge from the developers that an application for the new high school in Alnwick will go in by the end of this month is very welcome news for campaigners, politicians, parents and pupils alike.

The fight for a new, suitable high school to educate north Northumberland’s youngsters has been going on for a while, with one Government’s funding programme coming and going before a result.

It became one of those long-running sagas – like the dualling of the A1 perhaps – that seemed like it would never come to fruition.

But given the positive reaction so far and the fact that it is so long-awaited, it would seem that the application should breeze through the process and help the project stick to its goal of having work on site start by the end of this year or the start of next.

Educating our young people is about the quality of teaching, the curriculum, leadership and a whole host of other aspects, but having an appropriate, comfortable building, which doesn’t leak, is the least we should expect for our community.
