GAZETTE COMMENT: Keep new services coming for community

It is welcome news that Alnwick Infirmary’s new chemotherapy suite will be opened tomorrow giving patients the chance to access treatment closer to home.

Chemotherapy is particularly draining for both patients and their families, without also having to travel to and from a hospital half-an-hour away.

Now there is a facility in Alnwick, hopefully patients will find it a little easier to cope with the whole process.

Adding to the units at Berwick, Hexham, Wansbeck and North Tyneside, it is the missing piece of the jigsaw for north Northumberland residents and it brings an unused part of the hospital back into use.

It also comes on the back of the closure of Rothbury’s minor injuries unit and highlights the need to keep a hospital in the former Alnwick district to support its communities.

Hopefully, the opening of the chemo ward means that our hospital is here to stay and it is vital that it does.

If villages and communities are losing their services we need to make sure that Alnwick holds its own and remains an important service centre for the whole area.
