Roadworks to repair ageing gas mains in the centre of Alnwick, which are expected to last for three months, started today.
The work is to take place on Bondgate Within and Narrowgate and, while the roads were not closed to traffic today, it will be necessary to close the road to traffic and suspend all parking. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times and shops and businesses will remain open as usual.
This major project will involve replacing 250 metres of metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come. The project is starting outside HSBC and will take approximately 12 weeks to complete.
Richie Manuel, construction services area manager for NGN, said: "This work is the final phase of a £330,000 gas mains replacement scheme in Alnwick town centre. The first phase commenced in Bondgate Within in March and was completed in June.
"We have continued to work closely with Northumberland County Council and the Alnwick Chamber of Trade to carefully plan these essential works. The work has been scheduled for January as it is the quietest time of year and we will be working seven days a week to complete the work as quickly as possible."
He added: "We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience this essential work may cause and thank members of the public for their patience and support."
