Work to repair ‘vital’ gas mains in Alnwick is expected to be completed this week.
A spokesman for Northern Gas Networks said that it is hoping to reopen the stretch of Bondgate Within between the Bondgate Tower and the HSBC this weekend.
“In order to carry out this work safely and efficiently, it has been necessary to close Alnwick arch access to Bondgate Within and install temporary three-way traffic lights,” he said.
“The arch reopened temporarily on Friday, May 1, to pedestrians ahead of the 5th Fusiliers parade but is now closed to pedestrians and traffic again until Saturday, May 9.
The project is part of Northern Gas Networks’ ongoing development of infrastructure across the north of England.
It will involve installing new plastic pipes to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.
Richie Manuel, construction services area manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: “Our customer care officers and engineers have been speaking to businesses in the area to inform them about our work, and we will continue to keep our customers and stakeholders updated throughout the project via our website, Twitter and Facebook.”
County councillor Gordon Castle said: “I am pleased that we now have a revised completion day and am satisfied that the company is applying maximum resources to the task, which is specialised.
“I stressed that the final surface dressing must be red Biddlestone Tarmac to blend with the resurfacing completed recently in the same material.”
Coun Castle said he would also be taking recommendations to Northumberland County Council to see what business rates relief and rebate might be payable.
