Further change to the planning system in Northumberland have been approved, a year on from a major overhaul.

A complete revamp was agreed in April last year in the face of continuing poor performance and the fear that the Government could intervene and make decisions on the council’s behalf.

As part of a review into the changes, which highlighted improved performance in terms of time taken to determine applications and against government thresholds, it was suggested that the number of planning committees is reduced from three to two, with rights of way issues dealt with at a separate bi-monthly meeting.

This proposal, sparked by concerns about uneven workloads for the committees, was approved by the council last week.
