More than 160 people took part on the scenic five-mile walk around Holy Island, some travelling from as far afield as Cheshire, Grantham and Kilmarnock.

Joining the group were lots of young families and children, members of Berwick Rotary Club, staff from the Northern Centre for Cancer Care at the Freeman Hospital, and staff at the NHS Blood Transfusion service who are supporting Bloodwise this year.

There was also a great number of dogs enjoying the exercise.

So far, the walk has raised over £2,000 with sponsorship money still coming in.

The North Northumberland Fundraising Group raise money for Bloodwise, and this money raised including from entry fees and sponsorship will help fund ground-breaking blood cancer research taking place in Newcastle.

For the first time walkers wore Bloodwise T-shirts, following the charity’s change of name from Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.

Helen Tait from the fundraising group said: “We were delighted to see so many familiar faces and lots of new supporters too on such a beautiful day. There was a lovely atmosphere and we couldn’t have expected such fantastic weather. I’m very grateful to everyone who took part or who supported us in any way.”

The fundraising group would like to thank Northumbrian Water which donated water for the walkers, Linda Crouch who led the marshals, and all the pupils and staff at Berwick Academy for their help marshalling the route, Perryman’s Buses for providing transport for the marshals, and Lindisfarne Limited for the use of its forecourt.

Next year’s Holy Island Forget Me Not Walk will be on Sunday, September 24.
