An Alnwick man is gearing up to tackle an extreme sailing event to raise funds for a world-leading youth-work charity.

On Monday, Peter Biggers will embark on the St Kilda Challenge, in aid of Ocean Youth Trust Scotland (OYTS).

He will be part of a crew of around 20 people sailing from Oban to the island of St Kilda .

Peter, who is chairman of Alnwick Theatre Club, believes a big challenge lies ahead.

He said: “OYTS sets an annual adult extreme sailing challenge to raise funds for its work with young people.

“This year, St Kilda is our destination – the most remote island in the British Isles and notoriously difficult to make landfall on.

“While I have done a fair bit of dinghy sailing in coastal waters in the past, I have never sailed this far from land, so it really is an extreme challenge for me.

“I hope to be able to complete my RYA (Royal Yachting Association) competent crew qualification during the voyage too.”

Peter, 55, completed a training weekend earlier in the year on Alba Endeavour, which is the yacht being used for the challenge. The vessel is a former world racer.

He says there is an experienced crew comprising captain, mate and bosun and two watch leaders and volunteers, including Peter.

OYTS inspires young people through the challenge of adventure under sail.

Aged 12-24, they come from all backgrounds across Scotland and beyond.

Living and working together on the Trust’s boats with the charity’s volunteer sea-staff, the voyages build confidence, responsibility, resilience and respect.

Peter said: “I have paid for all my voyage costs so every pound I raise goes straight to OYTS.

“The funds I raise will be used by the OYTS to offer sail-training opportunities to young people.

“Sail training is a great way for young people to challenge themselves, learn new skills, learn about the marine environment and build lasting friendships.”
