At the annual meeting of Alnwick Town Council last Thursday, Coun Alan Symmonds was elected Mayor for 2016/17 and Coun George Mavin Deputy Mayor.
Coun Symmonds said: “I must first thank the outgoing Mayor, Bill Grisdale, for all his service to the town in his time as Mayor.
Coun Grisdale had done a lot behind the scenes which should be acknowledged and he should be thanked for his hard work and good humour.
“I must also thank the outgoing Deputy Mayor, Coun Sue Allcroft, for her service to the town.

“All mayors should be aware of the honour it is to be nominated and elected as mayor for their town.”
The new Mayor added that it would be a busy year ahead, including the referendum for the Neighbourhood Plan and delivery of the Community Action Plans.
Coun Symmonds previously served as Mayor in 2012/13 and he and Coun Mavin are pictured with Alnwick’s newest councillor, Susan Bell, who was co-opted at the same meeting to represent the Castle ward and sit on the cemetery and recreation & amenities committees.
The council still has a vacancy in the Clayport ward, which will run until May 2017.
Anyone interested is asked to make an application in writing setting out why they would like to be a councillor, in not more than 500 words. Send it to Bill Batey, Room 5, 27 Fenkle Street, Alnwick, NE66 1HW, or email to [email protected] by 5pm on Friday, June 3.
