The long-serving former MP for Berwick took up his seat in the House of Lords yesterday as Lord Beith.
The Liberal Democrat, who served as north Northumberland’s MP from 1973 until he stood down prior to this year’s General Election, was introduced by party colleagues Lord Shipley of Gosforth (John Shipley, former leader of Newcastle City Council) and Lord Steel of Aikwood (David Steel, former leader of the Liberal Democrats and MP in the Scottish Borders from 1965 to 1997).
He is pictured above with the two as well as his wife Diana, Baroness Maddock.
