A BLAZE ripped through a barn at a farm in Hadston tonight, with thousands of tonnes of hay alight.
Five fire crews attended the inferno, which erupted at around 6.15pm, following a large number of calls coming in from the public.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
Speaking at the scene, Mark McCarty, of Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The fire was well alight when we arrived. It has been burning for some time.” He added that crews were taking a ‘defensive approach’ to the blaze and they were trying to contain the flames.
No residents in surrounding houses have been evacuated.
Two appliances from Alnwick were released from the scene, but two pumps from Pegswood and one from Amble remain.
A Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said that a number of hay bales were alight and crews will be in attendance throughout the night.
She added that an investigation into the cause of the fire will be carried out once it is extinguished.
An eyewitness said they could see the flames from several miles away.
