Five Alnwick boys are named in the Northumberland U15 squad

Five players from Alnwick Rugby Club's Under-15 team are celebrating after being selected for the Northumberland County Squad.

Reece Gaines, Josh Lowes, Harry Paul, James Stanley and Drew Thompson were picked after their performances in regular training sessions with the North Northumberland area squad over the past 12 months.

They then had to play in selection matches against area sides from Cumbria and Durham, held at the Newcastle Falcons’ Kingston Park stadium.

The lads, who all attend the Duchess’s Community High School in Alnwick, must now further impress the county selectors in a series of three Friday night training sessions.

These start tomorrow in a bid to make the starting line-up for Northumberland’s opening game of the season against Cumbria on Sunday, December 18.

“These lads have worked really hard and are talented rugby players, everyone at the club is pleased for them,” said Alnwick Under-15s head coach David Leadbitter.

“It’s a real feather in the cap for Alnwick RFC to get five players from one team through to the Northumberland County Squad. I’m confident they will represent us with distinction.”

The rugby club are hoping that this latest success will inspire even more youngsters to give the game a go.

“Alnwick is a terrific club where everyone who steps through the door is assured of a warm welcome,” said Leadbitter.

“Rugby union is a great way to get fit, have fun and make friendships that can last a lifetime.

“Of course it’s great when some players go on to play for their county or at an even higher level, but at Alnwick we want anyone who pulls on a pair of boots, even if they have never played rugby before, to have a great time every Sunday morning. Come and join us.
