Businesses in Washington are being urged to get themselves in gear and bid for funding to install electric vehicle-charging posts.

Charge your Car, the region’s Plugged in Places scheme, is warning that the deadline for cash support for firms looking to put chargers on their premises is next Friday.

Washington already boasts 53 charge points, including 32 at car firm Nissan’s offices and two at the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service’s base.

They form part of the North East network of charge points, the biggest in the country with almost 600 in operation.

The network stretches from Berwick to Redcar and from South Tyneside to Hexham.

The funding on offer represents a saving of up to £3,750.

Josey Wardle, project manager for Charge your Car, said: “We’re delighted to have been able to provide funding to hundreds of business and organisations.

“We would encourage those considering incorporating sustainable transport into their operations to take advantage of the funding while it exists.”
