Fire crews called out again to deal with Otterburn blazes

The Ministry of Defence once again requested the assistance of fire crews to deal with grassland fires at the Otterburn military ranges.

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service was called out yesterday evening after the blazes flared up again.

Posting on Facebook last night, Rothbury county councillor Steven Bridgett wrote: 'The fire on the Otterburn ranges (Coquetdale side) flared up again this evening.

'The Ministry of Defence requested assistance from Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service. Units from Bellingham, Hexham and Tyne and Wear (covering Ponteland) responded. The Ministry of Defence has deployed eight wheel all-terrain vehicle as well.

'The wind has died down and the fire is back under control, the Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service is about to hand back control to the Ministry of Defence.'

The fires started at the end of last month and fire crews have been called out on a number of occasions to help bring the blazes back under control.
