It started 15 years ago when his wife and mother-in-law challenged him to write a novel.
And now, after many years of hard work, research and graft, a relieved and delighted Ian Knox has published his first work of fiction.
The 71-year-old from Longhoughton is behind The Welcome Scream – a tale of romance, tragedy and mystery.
Produced by Amazon, the poignant tale follows the loves, triumphs and heartbreaks of three intersecting lives.
Ordained clergyman Ian said: “This book has been 15 years in the making and I am really pleased with the end result. I have had some really good feedback about it.
“I have written and had published a number of non-fiction books, including Bereaved and Older People and the Church, but 15 years ago, my wife Ruth and her mother Joyce said they wanted me to write them a piece of fiction.
“To begin with, I was a bit shocked, but I thought I might have a story in me and to my great surprise, I did! I have dedicated the book to Ruth and Joyce and they really like the story.”
With his debut novel behind him, father-of-four Ian, who also has nine grandchildren, has hinted that there could be a second book, but not for a while.
He said: “I am going to take a little pause for breath, but I have been asked if I would do a sequel. There are certainly two characters from The Welcome Scream that could be developed, but we will see how the first book goes.”
The book is £8.99 in paperback or £3.96 on Kindle. It is available to buy online via amazon.co.uk
