A family-run fudge business has opened a new shop to give customers the chance to try before they buy the sweet treats.

The Old Stables, based at Broomhouse, Alnwick, launched earlier this month and will act as a base for the Mills family to sell its luxury Northumberland butter fudge.

The products are made by the Mills’ Northumberland Fudge Shop, previously known as Truly Scrumptious Fudge, and local ingredients are used where possible.

The goodies have previously been sold online or at events such as Alnwick Food Festival, but The Old Stables will allow them to be purchased over the counter.

The new venue also has a small traditional tearoom and will stock gifts from Northumberland, as well as other local produce.

Rachael Mills said: “The main object of our shop is to give people the chance to buy our fudge anytime they want and to have a chance to look before they buy.

“Aside from establishing a base for our fudge business, we aim to enable visitors to experience local Northumberland produce and gifts.

“Northumberland has a rich history and varied traditions that are showcased in many of our products.”

The Old Stables is formed from two of the stables at the back of the family’s house.

They started the project in September 2012 and reached completion in August 2013, before opening two weeks ago.

Through the new venture, the family is also keen to give something back, by raising money for charity.

The aim is to collect funds for a different cause each month.

Last week, the Mills’ were fund-raising for Breakthrough Breast Cancer and held the Great Pink Bake Off event.

The Old Stables sold pink-themed cakes and chocolate, as well as raffling a Guinness cake.

From Friday, November 1, to Monday, November 11, the shop will be fund-raising for the British Legion and Help for Heroes, and will be collecting for Children in Need during the month.

The shop is currently open Fridays to Mondays, 10am to 4pm. A grand opening is planned for next Easter.
