The Old Boathouse, in Amble, has submitted a planning application to Northumberland County Council for a front and side extension to its building to increase covers.

A design and access statement submitted with the proposal says that The Old Boathouse Group wants to upgrade the accommodation to enhance the property and build on the success of the nearby Harbour Village.

It adds that in busy periods, the restaurant has insufficient covers to satisfy demand and an increase in tables will ensure the restaurant’s viability and help to safeguard employment.

The proposal is to extend the restaurant northwards towards the River Coquet by three metres, with a side extension to the west, increasing the building area from 121 sq m to 181 sq m – an increase of 33 per cent.

The north extension will have partially-glazed walls, while the west section will have a servery, waiting and restaurant area and will also allow for internal alterations to take place which will improve the layout and operation of the venue.

In May, The Old Boathouse, which overlooks the harbour, won Coastal Fish Restaurant of the Year at the Fishing News Awards for the second year running.
