A planning application has been submitted to Northumberland County Council for an additional small observatory building at Kielder Observatory.
The proposal is a single-storey building housing the new observatory with a slide-off roof, an entrance porch and a warm room with an adjacent coffee servery. The warm room can double as a teaching space during inclement weather.
The arched roof of the observatory slides over the roof of the warm room by means of a rack and pinion system, operated by hand.
The overall plan dimensions of the building are 12 metres by 4.5 metres and it is intended to have small groups of 10 to 15 people in it at any one time.
The Kielder Observatory opened in 2008 after an international design competition to find an architect, held in 2005, and visitor numbers are now in the region of 20,000 per year.
