EUROPE: Subsidies may cause problems

I read with interest the letters on the topic of Europe, (Northumberland Gazette, May 19).

One of your correspondents suggested that in the hypothetical situation where Britain had left the EU, British exporters could be subsidised to offset the effects of EU tariffs.

However, it seems to me that any such assistance would be regarded as dumping and would almost certainly provoke retaliation.
